What are the rules for checked bags on Spirit Airlines?

  • Spirit Airlines allows one personal item to be carried free of charge to any passenger. 

  • Go (Basic Fare): A Carry-on bag is not included in this fare type. Carry-on can’t be purchased; you may choose to upgrade to Go Comfy or Go Big for a carry-on. 

  • Go Savvy: These fare types can carry one personal and one carry-on bag with them. If they want an extra allowance, they can upgrade or purchase. 

  • Go Comfy: They get equal allowances as the Go Savy ticket. However, they can exceed the allowance if they need to.  

  • Go Big: Includes one free carry-on bag and one free checked bag. For an extra baggage allowance, you have to pay charges. 

  • Spirit Gold Members: Always receive one free checked bag and one free carry-on bag, in addition to the free personal item. 

Personal bag: 


Spirit airlines baggage policy states that every passenger traveling on the airline can travel with one personal bag without paying any extra charges: 

  • The bag must be 18x14x8 inches in dimension.

  • This can be anything, such as a laptop bag or a small purse. 

  • This bag must remain under the seat in front of you.  

Carry-on baggage: 


Spirit Airlines' carry-on weight limit regulations have provided the dimensions of carry-on baggage as follows: 

  • 22”x18” x10” (56x46x25 cm) are the allowed dimensions for carry-on bags. 

  • This will include the handle and wheels. 

  • If your bag's dimensions exceed the provided ones, it will be treated as checked baggage. 

  • Even if the bag is not stowed safely, it will be treated as a checked bag.

  • Spirit Airlines' carry-on baggage fees state that if a person wants to bring a carry-on bag, but it is not included in the ticket, they can’t purchase it; they can only purchase checked baggage. 

Checked baggage: 


Spirit airlines baggage policy allows its Go Big ticket holders to bring one checked bag with them. Other passengers can purchase one if they want: 

  • The dimension of the bag must not exceed 62 linear inches. 

  • The weight of the bag must fall under 50 pounds. (22.6 kg).

  • The price of the checked baggage will depend on the area and the type of your ticket. 

  • If the bag exceeds the size and weight limit, then you have to pay extra charges to carry it on. 

Overweight and oversized baggage: 


Spirit airlines rules for baggage provide the size and weight limit for the checked baggage. If the baggage exceeds that limit, they have to pay for it. Here are the charges: 

  • If the baggage weight is anywhere between 51 and 100 pounds, then you have to pay an extra $25. 

  • If the baggage size is between 62 and 203 inches, then you have to pay $150 extra.

  • Airlines do not allow a bag whose weight is more than 100 lbs, and size exceeds 80 linear inches. 

  • However, in some special cases, even if the bag exceeds 80 linear inches, it can be carried for an extra amount of $150. 

How to add checked baggage: 


  • Passengers can add baggage online or at the airport while checking in; however, the check-in may be a little expensive. 

  • If you are adding baggage before the 24-hour period of departure, you can add by visiting the my trip section and following the instructions. 

  • If you are adding nags under 24 hours of booking, you can check in online and baggage with it. 

Military baggage: 


Military personnel and their spouse or children get some extra baggage allowance while traveling with Spirit Airlines for free. 

  • Passengers are allowed to carry two extra checked bags and one carry-on bag, without paying any extra cost. 

  • Passengers have to provide their military ID for verification.

  • Airlines verify the military ID through ID.ME. 

  • The spouse and child will get equal allowance as the military member only if they are traveling with the army personnel.
